The secret to finding your most flattering hairstyle is to find a style that works best with your face shape. Below is a description of the seven basic face shapes, their characteristics, and haircut or style suggestions for each.
An OVAL face shape is considered the ideal shape measuring about 1 ½ times as long as the width of the face at the cheeks and the forehead slightly wider than the jaw. Just about any hair style and length will work with an oval face because of it's basic symmetry.
Wide through the cheekbones and growing narrower from there to the chin, a DIAMOND face shape requires the least amount of effort to achieve an attractive balance.
A more rounded chin and shorter length differentiates the ROUND face from the oval. To give the appearance of length, hair styles that add height at the top while reducing width around the ears are best.
A hair style that lays close to the head at the top through the temples growing wider at the jaw will give the appearance of an oval shape for those with a HEART face shape. More width at the jaw line helps blend the cheeks into the characteristically narrower chin.
Balancing a PEAR shaped face can be achieved with a hair style that adds width at the forehead to offset a wider jaw line and rounded chin.
"Long and narrow" best describes the RECTANGULAR face. Shorter hair lengths, and styles that part on the side and frame the face will shorten and round out this face shape.
A SQUARE face is the same width at both the jaw line and brow line and appears too short and somewhat boxy. The best hairstyles for this face shape are those that will make the face appear longer and more delicate. A medium length hair style with wispy, face framing layers and added height on top will elongate the face and give the illusion of some curve.
